Bathroom Decor Ideas

Bathroom Decor Ideas

I have been trying to give a new look to a place that is often overlooked in a home, yes I am talking about the bathroom. Though my bathroom is a neat, sparkling clean place and always smells good, I wanted to add some personal touch and then some ideas popped in my mind. While I am implementing my ideas and giving a makeover to my bathroom, I thought I would share some bathroom decor tips with my dear readers also.
I think the bathroom is a space that needs equal attention as any other rooms in a home. It not only should look neat and clean but beautiful and functional also at the same time. So here are some easy tips to make your bathroom look like a beautiful and refreshing place at home. You can check out some inspirations on Homify too, I found some amazing ideas there.

  • The very first step to make any space look beautiful and pleasing is to make it free of clutter. Clean all the shelves and cabinets. Discard all those things that are no longer in use and just take up lot of cabinet space. Clutter free bathroom countertops will not only make your bathroom look spacious but it will provide space to keep essential cosmetics and decor accessories.

  • Clean everything from shower faucets to faucets, tiled walls to floors, shower enclosure to window glass. Remove cobwebs and dust from the corners. When the space is all clean and free from dust, it starts to look beautiful even without adding any extras.
  • If you give a fresh coat of paint to any space then don't bother about anything else. Paint itself can brighten up the space and can bring about the much needed change. Lighter shade for a small bathroom is what I will suggest as light shade will give the illusion of big space. Though you can always experiment with colours. One wall in darker shade and to tone it down all the other walls in lighter shades is in trend.
  • Mirrors can turn any dull space into bright and cheerful one. Mirror in large size above the countertop will not only look aesthetically pleasing but also provides better view. It reflects light and make bathroom appear bigger and brighter.

  • Lighting fixtures at right places can bring about a big difference in overall look of the bathroom. I will suggest warm diffused light for stylish and functional bathrooms. Lighting fixtures on either side of the mirror will provide better light than using just one fixture above the mirror.
  • Now when you are done with everything, it's time to decorate your bathroom and give it a personal touch. Put up some paintings that go well with the colour of the bathroom's paint. It can be your own creation as we are talking about personal touch. Keep vases full of fresh flowers or a small plant with beautiful planter to bring some cheer. Don't forget to place potpourri or reed diffuser on the bathroom counter top or place a few drops of essential oil on toilet paper roll. Your bathroom will smell amazing. Keep a basket full of hand towels and toiletries near the basin.

Accessorize Your Home

I love having guests not only in my home but in my blog also. It's always a pleasure to learn something new, interesting and different from each one of them. One such guest is joining us today here on 3D. One who is very good when it comes to accessorize home. Any guesses.....well let me introduce you to one of my dear friends, a very talented, warm and pleasing personality - Vandana ChoudhuryShe blogs over at 'Seasons in the Sun', a blog that truly reflects her sense of aesthetics. Today she is sharing some wonderful tips on 'how to accessorize your home', so read on and get inspired. Over to Vandana -

Accessorizing Home

Accessories....... I am so used to using this word for myself. Having the right accessories for my outfits, that's what comes to my mind the moment I hear this word. What an attractive word it is! But, at the same time, my home too comes to my mind. Buying something for my house is like buying hair clips, bands, watches, bags and shoes for my child! Yes, that is how I treat my home.

Home Accessorizing

These days, we have a wide variety to choose from as far as accessories go. Right from ethnic to contemporary to fusion to eclectic, what not is available in the stores and the flea markets. So why not indulge our nest, shop for it at times and dress it up beautifully. I am sure, we all love to do that! And we really do not need to burden ourselves in any way to doll up our home. Here is how you can start:

Cushion Covers:

Home Accessorizing

The most common accessory that comes to my mind are cushion covers. These days, the market is full of pretty ones. The ones with captions on them are such show stoppers. A couple of them causally thrown on the settee and there you have a conversation starter. Try it out yourself and share your experiences with us here :-)..... My accessory mantra is 'cushions'. I love the way they change the look of any place instantly. Floral patterns, the funky, quirky ones, the simple and plain cottons in solids, the Kalamkari prints, the more royal ones in brocades and Chanderi, the list goes on. A couple of floor cushions tossed in here and there and a comfortable seating arrangement is created.

Mats:

Accessorizing Home

I love colourful mats or chatais. They certainly create a warmth in any living space. I call them the 'informal' rugs and carpets. These days they are available in attractive shades of green, blue, purple, rust and yellow. The matted cushions, table mats, runners, here again, it is a long list. The little coasters can even be used to highlight a gorgeous decor piece. The  matted shelving units and chest of drawers are eye candies. Simple and unique yet classy.

Flowers:

Home Accessorizing

How can I ever forget fresh flowers as accessories for the home! Living in a city with a beautiful weather, flowers are a staple on my plateful of accessories. They light up a dull corner instantly!

Home Accessorizing

Be a thrifty chick:

Home Accessorizing
Did you notice that framed wooden comb. Brilliant idea...isn't it!!
The right kinds of accessories for the wall, the windows, for any part of our home ,go a long way in making our space come alive and ooze out oodles of warmth. And accessorizing depends to a large extent on one's imagination. Using recycled things in an innovative way; a wine bottle turned into a lamp base or mason jars as flower vases, pretty pieces of fabric or even handmade paper with an interesting motif can be framed as a wall art. It need not be a Jamini Roy or a M.F.Hussain on the wall. I once came across place mats on the dining table made of handmade paper that was laminated. Interesting, isn't it? :-).... loved this idea to bits!

Bored of your dupattas? Make use of them as a throw or a runner. These ideas are like our grandmothers' home remedies, useful, effective and inexpensive.

Accessorize your garden too:

Home Accessorizing

How can I forget our gardens! They, too, need accessories to dress up and why not, the number of garden boutiques in the cities, stocking some fun garden accessories come in handy at such times. A few interesting and colourful ornaments in the garden and it is all decked up. Fabulous pot holders, chimes, terracotta figurines and colourful shelves create a beautiful setting.

Home Accessorizing

One can be so innovative when it comes to dressing up the garden. Painted plastic bottles and jars, painted twigs, cute little nests hanging from the twigs, wrought iron figures of birds and animals, the terracotta ones, too, go in creating a dream garden.

I have shared a few photographs from our home. I am sure each one of you must be having your boxful of ideas ready and handy when it comes to dressing up your space beautifully! Do share your tips on accessorizing here, would love to hear your opinions and suggestions on this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you Vandana for sharing amazing tips on accessorizing home and images of your home are like icing on the cake. I am definitely going to follow your tips and it sure will help me transform my home into a warm and pleasing abode. How about you readers. How did you find these tips, aren't they just quick and easy. Happy decorating!!
Stay tuned and I'll be coming up with loads of images of my home :)

Home Tour: Ruma Ghosh

Many of my readers wanted me to showcase beautiful ethnic Indian homes in my blog. So today I am showcasing a very beautiful eclectic home of Ruma Ghosh. You must have seen an image of this home earlier in my Youtube video: Yeh Mera Ghar. Now lets take a tour of this soulful home without any delay.

Indian Interiors

In Ruma's own words...

"At present, we live in a 5000sq ft penthouse in Greater Noida.
I guess people from North-east have some aesthetic DNA, and I am no different. I say so because if you travel through the states of North-east you will find very few houses which do not have flower plants lining their front. You will find blood red begonias growing out of rusted tins & jars yet placed beautifully in front of a thatched house. Its a common sight to see local forest orchids hanging out of trees or stumps of a tree adorning houses in quaint little villages of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Assam to name a few".

Below is the image of her living room. The painting in the background depicts The Pushkar Mela done by her friend, Sagarika Sen.

Living Room

Now take a look of other side of her living room....

Living Room

"I get inspiration from all sorts of things, it could be a distressed old wooden bench a queer looking pot or a beautiful plant. To me it is immaterial whether I am living in a rented accommodation or a place of my own, the house which shelters me and my family of three boys and a wonderful husband from wind, rain and scorching sun has to be loved and taken care of. Decorating my home is my way of saying " I love you Home".

In below image v
intage "Time" Magazines' cover page covers wall in the dining room, photo frame kept near table lamp was a DIY project by one of my sons. I immortalized it by putting a toddler snap of my husband, Arnab & the painting in the last is wedding gift from a very dear friend, painter who is quite a household name in Singapore now. This is one of her initial paintings when she had just started.

Her love for paintings and framed pictures is clearly visible in all these images.
Some more gallery walls....

Lamps & Lanterns
"Born a midst the pristine green and gentle rolling hills of a tea garden I guess my first vision through the windows of our bungalow was of the well manicured and lovingly laid garden of my mother. Those days furniture were minimalist mostly consists of cane and other beautiful woods procured locally. However, even without the designer furniture,at a glance everything around us was balanced and beautiful. I guess that laid the foundation of my love for decorating home".

Garden

"Flowers that I have grown in different point of time".

Garden

Marriage boosted this feeling as my hubby Arnab is blessed with a keen sense of art and does a neat job of painting and and fixing a lot of my stuff at home. As luck would have we had to shift home many a times and together we have always ended up creating new look for all the places that we have lived in. I guess that too helped in coming up with new ideas.

Below is a picture collage of this year's Diwali celebration.

I am totally in love with her decor style and beautifully done up home. What about you dear readers, what do you think of this beautiful home...tell me...I am all ears :) I hope you enjoyed this home tour as much as I did.

Stay tuned and I will be showing you something very special. Have a wonderful weekend ahead!!

Can you say - Salvage Yard?

I really Did It! I got to go to a real salvage place! You know, the kind you see on TV. The kind with all the cool stuff that you want to take home and transform for your home.

This one was found by my Hubby in St. Louis called Fellenz. It's full to the roof of architectural artifacts! This is what you see when you drive up. Iron gates that when peeked over, rows of fireplace mantels.

Trash To Treasure Decorating

What can be more satisfying than reusing and recycling!!!
To me it feels great when I give new lease of life to stuff that is no longer useful or has become trash. So what do you need to turn that trash into treasure!! Well it's just a creativity and imagination. It not only saves money but gives new life to an old & dying objects.
Here are some ideas to inspire you:

Use old furniture: You can upcycle or repurpose your old furiniture in many ways.
Turn headboard into a nice outdoor bench with some carpentry work. Old door can be used as a wall panel that has sconce fit on it and can be placed either side of the bed. Making shelves out of old door is a very smart and useful way to reuse.

Cable spool can be turned into a nice breakfast table. Just give it a fresh coat of paint and put glass cut in circle shape on it.
An old table can serve as a dresser you just need to add a mirror and drawers.
While old dresser can be used as a bathroom vanity.
Worn out furniture can easily be given new look by painting them in some new color.
Sometimes replacing old upholstery with new one gives a whole new look to the place.
Sewing machine works well as a desk or nightstand. Old ladder can serve as a towel hanger in bathroom. A photo frame can be used as a tray.

Repurposing, Recycling

Use Old Crockery & Utensils: Are you bored of your old kitchenware then repurpose them and you will start loving them all over again.
Old teapot makes a very beautiful planter grow succulent in it and it looks lovely placed on center table. A wonderful way to transform teapots is to make a bedside lamp of it. Stack teapots or some cups then install shade and wiring on the top of the stack. Needs some skills though.

Empty mason jars (Jem/jelly jars) have umpteen number of uses. Use them as votive/candle holder, vase, pen/brush holder, chandelier and liquid soap dispenser.

Recycling Ideas

Spoons bent and nailed on a wooden panel can serve as a tea light holders and create warm and welcoming ambiance. Whereas forks bent and nailed can work as hooks. Colander can make a very beautiful pendant light. Paint those big old metal trays and hang them on wall to work as magnetic message board.
If you are not using your frying pans/skillets then think something different paint them, drill a hole in the center and install clock mechanism it will make a lovely clock for your kitchen.

Repurposed Spoon, Colander, Tray, Frying Pan

Use old Clothing: Before donating your old clothing wait a minute and think you can turn them into fabulous home decor items.
Make a beautiful cushion cover out of old shirt or embroidered kurta.
If you have some fancy and colorful cloth then you can cover old photo frame with it to give it a totally new look.
Several old colorful fabrics sewed together can make a beautiful quilt. A rag rug can also be woven with these fabrics for adding instant drama to your room.
Old shawls or duppata can be turned into an eye catching wall hanging by adding some beads or stones.

Some other stuff:
There are many other objects that can be turned into something useful and beautiful. Use old newspapers to weave a basket or tray to keep on center table. You can make newspaper wind chime to hang in garden or make coasters to surprise your guests. Cut 8"-10" broad stripes of newspaper, roll them with the help of round thin stick and glue the end. Now start weaving until your desired shape ans size is achieved. Paint it in acrylic color of your choice and then apply varnish. It looks same as wicker basket and strong enough to hold some fruits, flowers of light home decor accessories. For complete tutorial on newspaper tray click here and for newspaper wind chime click here

Empty soft drink cans can be reused or upcycled in many ways like as a vase, pen/brush holder, planter, wall sconces and candles.
Old tires painted in bright colors make beautiful hanging as well as garden planter. One more use is turn it into ottoman with little creativity, put hardboard or ply on one side and attach legs on the other side, glue twine or rope all around it.
Even coconut shell and plastic bottles can be turned into a hanging planter.

Everything around you has more than one purpose. Use your imaginations and creativity to create best out of the waste. Happy Decorating!!
