DIY: Decoupage Slippers

What do you do when something is just not ready to wear out.
I have something like that with me since past eight years and it's still in good condition. The only thing is that I am super bored of its plain and dull look. It's my slippers.....yes you heard it right. Please don't laugh or make fun of me. They are really boring, have a look.......
and they are too common.
Kitschy Slippers

So what do you suggest I should do with this slippers...........
Well kitsch and decoupage was on my mind since long so why not fulfill both the desires and at the same time give new look to the extremely boring slippers.
So here I go with some easily available supplies:

Kitschy Slippers

  • Colorful paper cuttings from Magazine
  • Scissors
  • White water based glue
  • Acrylic Medium/ Modpodge
  • Brush
  • Varnish

1. I washed it and then let it dry completely. applied acrylic medium on the surface and put paper cutting.

2. Then I applied acrylic medium on paper too that I pasted. Kept on doing step 1 and 2 until the surface was all covered with paper. Let it dry.

3. Then I mixed 1 part glue in 1 part water and applied it properly on the surface and pasted a cutting of this cute doll that I found in magazine. Let it dry.

4. After it was completely dried I gave two coats of varnish and it is almost waterproof and that's how it looks now!!

I am happy with the outcome. Though I don't know how long it will last but I am happy that it is not an eyesore anymore. I love wearing it :)

DIY: How To Paint Plastic Container

I have recycled so many plastic food containers and turned them into beautiful and useful planters and brush/pen holders. All my readers liked them so much that they wanted me to share the tutorial on how to paint a plastic food container. So sharing it today!!

Supplies:
Plastic container (That you want to recycle)
Acrylic Colors
Paint Brush
Rag
Varnish

Steps:
1). The very first step is to wash and clean the container. It should be free from dust, oil or grease.

Plastic food container recycling.

I cut the edge of container in pattern. Have a look....

2). Next apply either water based primer or white acrylic color on the container. Do not worry if the paint doesn't spread evenly on the container's surface as you will going to give a second coat of primer. Let it dry for atleast 30-40 mins. Give another coat of primer and then again let it dry for 30 mins.

Plastic food container recycling.

3). Now paint the container in your choice of color. Remember do not mix excess of water or else color wouldn't spread properly.

Plastic food container recycling.

Giving a second coat of color is always a good idea. As it gives a good finish.

4). Now its turn to make pattern or motifs of your choice. You can use acrylic/pearl/shimmer or enamel paint. I used pearl colors and this time it's my take on 'Gond Art'. I truly loved painting it. Its simple and beautiful...just lines and dots and it is done.

Plastic food container recycling.

Painting these two fishes took one hour. Painstaking isn't it.......!! I was so meticulously filling the lines and dots in the fishes that I even held my breath so my hand wouldn't move or shake (and I usually do that :)))

5). Now that you are done with art on the pot let it dry for 2-3 hrs and then apply protective coat of varnish.
It will give shine to the pot and protect it as well. Here is my complete pot with Gond Art on it. How do you find it.

Plastic food container recycling.

It's adorning my dining table and looks fabulous there.

A closer look. Lots of fishes there :)))

I measured ribbon around the waist of the dress form and pinned my measurements, but left the ribbon long enough to tie.

Round Mirror Love

I have an attraction to old mirrors and this round one is currently one of my favorites!

Remembering back when I was just a young 20 year old and an old oak secretary was given to me and my hubby. It was the kind with the glass door display cabinet on one side and the drawers with slant opening desk and a mirror above. Well that old mirror was all messed up and I didn't appreciate it and had

Songbook Page Christmas Tree

I have a wreath that I made using rolled music book pages...

And thought, "Hey why not make another shape out of the same rolled up pages".

Plus, I wanted to show you early enough so that you could make one for Christmas if you so felt the desire!

I started with a clear plastic cone shape like this, but you can use any cone made out of different material like heavy card stock...

Recently I shared with you a few pictures from my Son's wedding.

To not step on any toes, I told my Daughter-In-Law (DIL) that she needed to tell me if she wanted me to make something for the wedding.

One of the things that she asked me to make was a couple of chalkboards.

This was my problem...How would I get these chalkboards from Illinois to Kansas in our car without messing up

DIY: Sunburst Mirror

Don't miss any update from my blog, like my Facebook Page(click here)
Here is long due and promised post on Sunburst mirror tutorial. Lot of readers mailed me to know how to make this sunburst mirror, so here I'm sharing it with you all lovely and wonderful readers :)

http://designdecoranddisha.blogspot.com

Supplies:
Hardboard -2 (8 Inches diameter)
Mirror-1 (8 Inch diameter)
Skewers 32 (I used broom sticks though)
Glue gun
Embroidery mirrors in 2 sizes
Stones/sequins
Card stock
Craft glue
Scissors
Hook
Acrylic color of your choice
Paint Brush
Step 1:
Get mirror of your desired size. Stick back of the mirror to the hardboard with glue.

Step 2:
Cut the card stock diameter greater (Approx. 2 Inches) than  hardboard/mirror's diameter  Now on this card stock draw a circle with diameter 4 Inches less than mirror and cut it with paper cutter/knife. Inner circle is of no use. Keep the remaining part.

Step 3:
Paste this card stock on mirror as shown.

Step 4:
Stick sequins/stone in a way so that it is half on mirror and half on card stock.

Step 5:
Now mark the back side of the mirror i.e. on hard board side as shown in pic. Tag every mark with B for Big Skewer. M for Medium Skewer, S for Small Skewer. If you want to keep all the skewers in same size then no need to tag them.

Step 6:
Cut the skewers in three different sizes. Small, medium & big as shown in pic.

Step 7:
Stick all the skewers accordingly. That is big skewer on tag B, medium on M & small on S. Let it dry for at least 2 hr. Refer pic below.

Step 8:
Now stick another circular hard board on this arrangement of skewers (i.e on the back side of sunburst mirror) and fix hook on it to hang it on wall.

Step 9:
Turn the mirror side up. Now start sticking embroidery mirrors on these skewers in a manner that you like. Try different orientation  and go for the one you like most.

Step 10:
Now color all the skewers in golden color or color of your choice. Let it dry.
Sunburst mirror is ready. You can go wild with your imaginations. Try making one and let me know.

Here is my sunburst mirror that looks beautiful against my mango yellow wall

Hope you will love this and will going to try this :) Happy creating!!

Fan Of The Week: Shashwatee Raut

First let me share some exciting news for all my lovely readers. I know you all love decorating your homes, so here is a contest and a chance to win gift voucher worth Rs.3000/- for more information click here.
This really cheers me up and keep me going when I receive some sweet notes from fans and readers of my blog. One such reader 'Shashwatee Raut' sent me her very very creative work to share here. Have a look of her DIY projects and beautiful balcony garden. Over to Shashwatee-

Many items in my garden are clay items which I have painted...Tulsi pot, small dog, swan, stool on which I have kept the fountain and the lotus pot.

Small cranes are made of U shaped hair pins and left over M-Seal. The mushrooms are made of plaster of Paris and body of a Reynolds pen (white body)...I have used egg shells as mould to give the mushroom shape. The small insect is made of a plastic ball. The bells are made of Chai ke kulhad!!!

This is Shashwatee's small but lively and beautiful balcony garden.

These five hanging pots are just rabdi handis which I have painted :)
They look so vibrant and enhance the beauty of her small balcony garden.

Small pot in below image is made of paper clay...and I have placed an artificial plant in it as I can't water it......and the lotus like pink flower is made of pistachio shells.
That lotus looks so real . Pot and butterflies are adding character to the space.

The nest in below image is made of coconut coir...I tried to make it as real as possible but......it became like this.
Now who will going to believe this that nest isn't real.

I have made the pen stand with a rejected glass on which there was a crack...by simply pouring candle drops on it..then painted with fabric colour.
That's creativity at it's best.
And the tablas are made of coconut shell..
Two creations are inspired from yours..
This is beautiful and she has done great job. You can find these two tutorials here and here.

Thanks a lot Shashwatee for sharing your passion for art and craft here on Design Decor & Disha.
What say friends. Isn't everything just fabulous. Everything that she made tells a story of her creative imaginations. What do you think.....just let her know through your comments :)
